Support For Those Who Serve Others
First responders are often expected to remain calm, focused, and strong in situations that most people will never experience. Over time, repeated exposure to emergencies, trauma, loss, danger, and high-pressure decision-making can affect mental health, relationships, sleep, and overall well-being.
At Discovery & Wellness Counseling, we provide compassionate, confidential therapy for first responders and their families throughout the Phoenix Valley. Our team understands that reaching out for support can feel unfamiliar—especially for professionals who are accustomed to helping others. Therapy offers a private space to process difficult experiences, strengthen coping skills, and reconnect with the parts of life that matter most.
We work with first responders seeking support at our North Phoenix/Anthem and Northeast Scottsdale offices. You are not alone. Discovery and Wellness Counseling can help
Therapy for First Responders
Our practice supports professionals across the first responder community, including:
Firefighters and fire service professionals.
Emergency medical technicians and paramedics.
Law enforcement officers and correctional professionals.
911 dispatchers and emergency communications personnel.
Search and rescue professionals.
First responder spouses, partners, and family members.
Retired first responders and those transitioning out of service.
First responder therapy does not require a person to be in crisis. Many people seek counseling to address ongoing stress, improve relationships, prepare for a career transition, or process experiences before they become more disruptive.
Concerns We Address
Therapy for first responders may help with:
Post-traumatic stress and trauma-related symptoms.
Anxiety, hypervigilance, or feeling constantly on alert.
Sleep problems, nightmares, or difficulty relaxing.
Emotional numbness, irritability, anger, or withdrawal.
Grief after the death or serious injury of a colleague or community member.
Burnout, compassion fatigue, and occupational stress.
Alcohol or substance use concerns.
Relationship, communication, and family stress.
Difficulty transitioning from work mode to home life.
Career changes, retirement, or leaving the profession.
Military-to-civilian transitions and veteran concerns.
Returning to work after a critical incident, injury, or leave.
You do not need to wait until symptoms significantly interfere with your work or relationships before seeking support. First responder counseling can also help with prevention, professional longevity, personal growth, and maintaining the relationships and activities that matter most

Therapists Who Get It
At Discovery & Wellness Counseling, our intention is to connect first responders with therapists who get it—therapists who understand the culture, pressures, and personal impact of this work. We provide compassionate, confidential therapy for firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers, veterans, and their families throughout the Phoenix Valley.
Our North Phoenix/Anthem and Northeast Scottsdale offices offer a supportive environment where first responders can speak openly with professionals who understand that asking for help requires trust. You do not have to explain every aspect of the job before you can begin addressing what you are experiencing.
Experience You Can Trust
Our team brings both professional understanding and relevant personal experience to working with first responders.
Jim Saylor
Jim Saylor is a retired Phoenix Police Department officer with 20 years of law enforcement experience. As a veteran, Jim also understands the unique demands of military service, the transition between service and civilian life, and the importance of trust, confidentiality, and respect when seeking support.
His experience allows him to understand the realities that may be difficult to communicate to someone unfamiliar with law enforcement or military culture. Jim works to provide a grounded, nonjudgmental space for first responders and veterans who are navigating trauma, stress, relationships, career transitions, or the cumulative impact of service.
Heidi Bouelette
Heidi Bouelette brings 10 years of experience working with first responders. She understands how repeated exposure to high-stress situations, traumatic events, grief, and occupational pressure can affect emotional health and relationships over time.
Heidi works collaboratively with clients to address concerns such as trauma, anxiety, burnout, sleep difficulties, emotional disconnection, relationship stress, and challenges transitioning between work and home. Her approach is compassionate, practical, and tailored to each person’s individual goals.
At Discovery & Wellness Counseling, we strive to provide a respectful and grounded environment where you can speak openly. Discovery & Wellness Counseling provides first responder therapy in the Phoenix Valley, including North Phoenix/Anthem and Northeast Scottsdale. Cheerful First Responders

First Responders face trauma as part of the job. Firefighters, Law Enforcement officers, EMTs, paramedics, dispatchers, and other emergency personnel may regularly encounter fatal accidents, medical emergencies, child injuries, violence, disasters, line-of-duty deaths, and other deeply distressing situations.
Repeated exposure to traumatic events can take a toll on mental health over time. For many first responders, peer support is one of the most trusted and accessible ways to begin addressing stress, trauma, and PTSD.
Yet there is an important group that can sometimes be overlooked: the peer supporters themselves.
